This whole issue about banning civilian ownership of firearms in the United States is not workable. Banning firearms ownership will NOT work!! As evidence, look at what happened in the United Kingdom when personal ownership of firearms, and specifically of pistols, was all but banned; an immediate increase of 40% use of firearms in criminal activity against a now de facto disarmed populace. The same kind of thing happened in Australia as well. Laws against civilian ownership of firearms doesn't prevent gun-related crimes, as criminal will get them anyway.

Consider that, if such bans worked, Prohibition would have prevented all alcohol consumption (except for "medical purposes") in the United States. Did it work? Hardly; people still consumed alcohol, and the illegal alcohol trade led directly to the rise in power of the Mafia. Much the same situation could occur if the government tried to ban firearms ownership, assuming, of course, that it could actually collect up all civilian firearms, a doubtful proposition at best, due to budgetary restraints and lack of personnel.
